Located southwest of Paris, the Rambouillet forest, with its hardwood, softwood and numerous hundred-year-old trees, guarantees you a change of scenery and silence. Its 20,000 hectares make it the largest wooded area in the Ile-de-France region. It’s home to countless ponds including the Etang d’Or, alongside which Huttopia Rambouillet is located.
The most famous are the Etangs de Hollande (or Etangs de Saint-Hubert). These six ponds stretch out over a little more than 5 km and are part of a hydraulic complex that was created by Vauban under the reign of Louis XIV to supply the basins of the Château de Versailles park with water. Their name derived from “Orlande”, the name of a former local castle.
A genuine natural reserve, they’re home to a variety of birds, some of which are protected : ducks, moorhen, grey herons, etc. You can discover this area on foot, by bike or on horseback and in the summer, a recreational area is open with a variety of activities like swimming and fishing.
